'It's a disgrace for Akufo-Addo gov't' – Aduomi on vote-buying at Ejisu by-election
It is a disgrace for the Akufo-Addo government to have deployed vote-buyers whose main aim was to bribe voters and electoral officers to warp the polls in favour of the New Patriotic Party in the just-ended Ejisu by-election, defeated independent candidate Kwabena Aduomi has said.
"It's a disgrace to the government and the NPP", the former three-MP told journalists at the poll grounds.
He said Ghana has no future under this Akufo-Addo government because they have no achievements upon which to base their message.
Their only strategy is to hide in corners and share money, Mr Aduomi, who eas berated by the president ahead of the polls said.
His archrival, Mr Kwabena Boateng, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), emerged victorious in the by-election, securing 27,782 votes, which accounts for 55.8% of the total votes cast.
Mr Aduomi garnered 21,534 votes, constituting 43.3% of the total votes.
Ms Beatrice Boakye of the Liberal Party received 140 votes (0.3%), while Esther Osei of the Convention People’s Party obtained 89 votes (0.2%).
Independent Candidates Joseph Agyemang and Atakora Joseph secured 222 votes (0.4%) and 23 votes, respectively.
The by-election was necessitated by the passing of Member of Parliament and Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. John Ampontuah Kumah, on March 7, 2024.
The contest was fiercely fought, particularly between Mr Boateng and Mr Aduomi, a former member of the NPP who went solo.
However, Mr Boateng's victory was not without controversy, as allegations of vote-buying were levelled against his campaign.
In response, the Electoral Commission took action by removing two temporary staff members following the emergence of a viral video purportedly showing them accepting a bribe during the Ejisu by-election.
