Bawumia launches TAP &GO project today
The Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is expected to launch the Tap & Go Transport Initiative today, Monday, 19 February 2024, at the head office of the Metro Mass Transit Limited.
With the government’s commitment in digitalising the economy, this initiative aims at helping to formalise the informal transport sector with the help of well-structured and tested technology.
The Tap and Go initiative is a digital card with preloaded cash which will enable passengers pay for their fares by simply tapping the card on a fixed machine installed in the bus. This initiative is quite similar to the Oyster Card System used in the United Kingdom.
This initiative will be in the form of both physical and virtual sessions, to enable users feel comfortable. The virtual card option will be accessible using the Tap and Go mobile app. It will allow users to make payment using their mobile phones if they do not want to use the physical cards.
Metro Mass Transit Limited in a press statement noted that the Tap and Go initiative is aimed to build a single system for the entire transport eco-system for all the various transport operators to enhance efficiency and bring about transport fares stability in Ghana.
The Tap and Go initiative is further expected to bring a face lift in the public transport systems in the country and enhance the services they render.
State-owned transport services like Metro Mass Transit and STC are said to adopt this technology to improve their services and give passengers a more convenient treat.
