Concerned drivers postpone planned fare increase
The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has announced a postponement of their planned 15 percent increase in transport fares, which was scheduled to take effect on Monday, July 22, 2024.
The decision to suspend the fare hike follows an invitation from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Transport Ministry for a round-table discussion aimed at ensuring a smooth implementation of the new fares or possibly canceling the increase altogether.
In a statement, the Transport Operators Association explained that the meeting with the GPRTU and the Transport Ministry is crucial to address concerns and reach a consensus that benefits both operators and the general public.
The Association emphasised its commitment to working collaboratively with relevant stakeholders to find a balanced solution that addresses the financial needs of transport operators while considering the economic impact on commuters.
The Association assured its members and the general public that they would be kept informed of any developments following the discussions.
They urged their members to remain patient and trust in the leadership to navigate the situation effectively.
"We are committed to ensuring that any fare adjustments are fair and justified, taking into account the current economic conditions and the welfare of both operators and passengers," a statement from the Association read.
The postponement comes amid growing public concern over the potential impact of the fare increase on the cost of living. Many commuters had expressed worry that the hike would exacerbate the financial strain on households already struggling with rising prices of goods and services.
