Concessional loans: Ghana still Africa's most indebted country to IMF
Ghana retains its position as Africa's foremost debtor to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in terms of Concessional Lending and Debt Relief Trust. As of January 31, 2024, the country's exposure to the Fund amounted to 2.088 billion Special Drawing Rights, equivalent to $2.77 billion.
According to the IMF's Quarterly Finances report for January 2024, Ghana's outstanding concessional loans to the institution surpassed previous records from July 2023. The country had received a $600 million bailout package from the IMF in June 2023 and January 2024 to address economic challenges and stimulate growth.
Ghana's concessional loan outstanding represents 11.0% of Africa's total indebtedness to the Fund, which stands at SDR 18.804 billion.
Ghana has made repayments amounting to SDR 61 million, equivalent to $81.13 million.
These loans, categorised as concessional lending with low-interest financing, are provided by the PRG Trust to qualifying low-income member countries.
The Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya maintain their positions as the second and third largest debtors to the Fund in Africa as of January 1, 2024.
