GA/R: Land dispute triggers 21-day eviction notice for Bohye Market Traders
A heated dispute over land ownership has resulted in a 21-day eviction notice being served to traders at Bohye Market in the Madina constituency of the Greater Accra Region.
The Chief Executive Officer of Multi-Consult, Mr. Clemence Gyato, asserts that the land on which the market stands is his private property and has directed the traders to vacate the area.
According to Mr. Gyato, a former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of La-Nkwantang Municipal Assembly, Jenifer Dede Afagadzi had appealed to him to allow the traders to use the land temporarily.
However, tensions have since escalated after the current MCE reportedly claimed that the land belongs to the government, not to Mr. Gyato.
Caught in the middle of the standoff, the market women are pleading with both parties to find a peaceful resolution.
They are requesting to be relocated to an alternative site where they can continue their businesses without disruption.
Mr. Gyato has further appealed to President John Mahama to intervene in the matter and call the Municipal Chief Executive to order.
The ongoing dispute has created anxiety among the traders, many of whom depend on their market stalls for daily survival. The situation underscores the persistent challenges faced by market women in Ghana, who often struggle with land insecurity and the threat of displacement in their pursuit of economic stability.
