GWCL opens new technology & innovation lab

Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has commissioned a technology and innovation laboratory to tackle head-on emerging problems of non-revenue collection to scale up the quality of its services.
Also known as meter lab and telemetry system, the lab is a robust system that will enable the company to read volumes of water at locations aimed at addressing leakages and non-revenue issues facing Ghana's foremost water distributor.
Apart from that, the latest lab will enable the company to embrace the concept of portability, mobility and the use of mobile device to identify volumes of water movement in specific places.
Speaking at the commissioning of the laboratory in Accra on Tuesday, 22 June 2021, Managing Director of GWCL Dr. Clifford A. Braimah said "My plans for the GWCL is to develop the company to be a world-class utility and this requires great reforms and renewed sense of direction."
Dr. Braimah noted that "In order to facilitate this change in GWCL, Technology and Innovation Department was created four years ago to leverage the power of innovative technology to improve on our business process and expand the impact of shared management information".
Accordingly, the GWCL has deployed about 100,000 ultrasonic smart meter with drive by and remote reading capabilities built two new Geographical Information System Offices and refurbished 13 offices across the country providing state of the art tools to allow capturing and management of all GWCL assets in a virtual space.
According to Dr. Braimah, the GWCL has implemented a robust cybersecurity system to protect critical IT infrastructure extended high speed internet via fiber-optic network to all the 16 regions of Ghana coupled with treatment plants to most district offices.
Dr. Briamah also charged the public to immediately report people who engage in illegal consumption of water in the country.
He stated that "some of our customers have turned themselves into commercial operators, taking water they don't pay for. Report such unscrupulous persons".
