Ghana Gas CEO promotes investment opportunities at global energy show in Canada
The Chief Executive Officer of Ghana National Gas Company Limited (Ghana Gas), Judith Adjobah Blay, has highlighted investment opportunities in Ghana's natural gas sector at the ongoing Global Energy Show in Calgary, Canada.
Addressing participants at the international energy conference, Ms. Blay outlined Ghana Gas' role in supporting energy security, economic growth and regional energy integration, while presenting strategic projects available for investment.
Ghana Gas' Role in Energy Supply
According to Ms. Blay, Ghana Gas operates the country's main midstream gas infrastructure, responsible for the gathering, processing and transmission of natural gas to power generation and industrial users.
She said the company supplies about 84 percent of the fuel used by thermal power plants, which contribute approximately 60 percent of Ghana's electricity generation mix. This, she noted, results in annual fuel cost savings estimated at US$1.3 billion, in addition to about US$60 million in savings from Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) supply.
Ms. Blay also stated that the Ghana Gas Processing Plant produces condensate used in the production of premix fuel for fishermen, helping to reduce premix fuel costs and government subsidy expenditure.
Regional Energy Integration
The Ghana Gas CEO highlighted the company's partnership with the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAGP), which allows gas transmission between Takoradi and Tema through a bidirectional flow system.
She noted that the integration of Ghana Gas infrastructure with the West African Gas Pipeline in 2018 enabled Ghana to participate actively in the regional gas transmission market.
Ms. Blay further disclosed that Ghana Gas is a stakeholder in the proposed African Atlantic Gas Pipeline project, which aims to connect Nigeria and Morocco through several African countries, including Ghana. She said the project is expected to create investment opportunities and strengthen energy trade between Africa and Europe.
LNG and Future Supply Security
Ms. Blay described Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as an important part of Ghana's long-term energy security strategy.
She said Ghana has already invested in LNG regasification infrastructure and terminal facilities and is prepared to receive LNG imports when market conditions become commercially viable.
Expansion Projects
The Ghana Gas CEO announced plans for several expansion projects and invited investors to participate.
The projects include the construction of a second Gas Processing Plant (GPP II), a 300-kilometre onshore gas transmission pipeline and the Pentane Monetization Project.
She explained that the additional gas processing plant is intended to meet rising demand, while the transmission pipeline will connect major industrial zones and resource corridors.
Ms. Blay also said Ghana Gas is investing in technology to reduce the flaring of hydrocarbons associated with gas processing by stabilising and conditioning pentane for commercial use.
Investment Environment
She expressed confidence in Ghana's investment climate, citing the country's legal framework, independent judiciary, market environment and strategic geographic location.
According to her, Ghana is well-positioned to serve as a gas transit and aggregation hub within the West African region.
Commitment to Energy Development
Concluding her address, Ms. Blay reaffirmed Ghana Gas' commitment to supporting Ghana's energy security, industrial development and regional energy integration.
She said the company remains focused on expanding infrastructure, strengthening partnerships and developing future energy solutions to support growth within Ghana and across West Africa.
