The Ghana Platinum Excellence Awards officially launched yesterday with a clear mission: to thank Ghanaian companies that have survived, served, and stayed relevant for decades.

Speaking at the launch, CEO Nii Saka Brown said the idea has been “on the drawing board for 3 to 4 years” and is designed to spotlight longevity, not just profit.

“An award for companies, not personalities”

According to Nii Saka Brown, the awards will recognize companies established from pre-independence up to 20 years ago. 

“Any company that has lived up to 70 years has done well, so they need to be appreciated,” he stated. “We have companies that have served Ghana for years which nobody cares about. This award will help to identify those companies and award them.”

He noted that many businesses were already around when he was born and are still operating today. “The companies that have served Ghana for a long time and are still available need to be identified and awarded for their good job,” he added.

The scheme will also honor products that have served the country for a long period. In total, 20 companies and 4 products will be awarded in this year’s maiden edition.

Filling the Gap Left by Profit-Based Lists

The CEO said the awards fill a gap left by existing rankings like the Ghana Club 100. 

“There are companies that have served well but are not part of the Ghana Club 100,” he explained. “They look at their profit and award them. But this award is based on the fact that the companies have served for years and are still surviving. It’s a thank you to the companies for serving Ghana for a long period.”

His message to honorees: “They shouldn’t‘die’, but stay alive for the coming generations.”

No Voting, Free Nominations

Unlike many awards schemes, there will be no public voting. 

“We are going to write to the Registrar General’s Department to give us the list of companies,” Nii Saka Brown said. The list will be published on the official website, www.ghanaplatinumawards.com.

Once nominations are announced, the public can visit the site and fill a form to participate — free of charge.

The launch sets the stage for an awards program focused on legacy, resilience, and national service over flash-in-the-pan success.
