Liberian delegation in Ghana to understudy mining policy
The deputy minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr George Mireku Duker, on behalf of the sector minister, on Wednesday, 19 January 2022, received a seven-member delegation from the Republic of Liberia comprising officials from their Revenue Authority, Ministries of Finance, and Mines.
They are in Ghana to understudy the country’s policy framework developed to project revenue generation in the Artisanal Small-Scale Mining (ASM) sector.
Mr Duker, who is also the Member of Parliament for the Tarkwa Nsuaem Constituency in the Western Region, used the opportunity to welcome the entourage, and extensively took them through the fiscal regime of the sector, as outlined by the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006, Act 703, and its related Regulations and Amendments.
Ghana's various institutional frameworks developed to achieve the necessary fiscal gains in the sector were outlined in the policy document, he told the delegation.
Pursuant to their request and interest, Mr Duker discussed with them the recent reduction in withholding tax on small-scale gold exports and the new anti-gold smuggling task force put in place.
He assured them of the ministry's commitment to supporting them with all the relevant information and knowledge through all the technical agencies in order to develop an enviable fiscal regime to derive value from their ASM sector
