Offinso North ‘Pragya’ riders urged to comply with road regulations ahead of legalisation in 2026
Riders of motor tricycles, popularly known as ‘Pragya’, in the Offinso North District of the Ashanti Region have been urged to strictly comply with road traffic regulations as plans progress to formalise and legalise their operations from January 2026.
This call was made during a multi-stakeholder engagement held in Akumadan, aimed at discussing the framework for regulating the operations of tricycles, which have become a key means of transportation within local communities.
The meeting, organised by the Ashanti Regional leadership of the National Union of Tricycle Operators of Ghana (NUTOG), brought together representatives from the police, local authorities, tricycle owners, and riders to deliberate on safety, compliance, and operational standards.
District Police Commander, DSP Paul Boabeng Donkor, led a session to educate the riders on road safety practices, licensing procedures, and the importance of adhering to traffic laws to reduce accidents and promote discipline on the roads.
Speaking to Accra-based CTV, the Regional Chairman of NUTOG, Mr. Seidu Mubarak, said the engagement formed part of the Union’s broader efforts to prepare operators for the upcoming legalisation process.
He disclosed that an insurance policy is being introduced as part of the new regulations to provide protection for both riders and passengers.
“Our goal is to make tricycle transport safer, organised, and fully recognised under Ghana’s transport laws.
The insurance cover will ensure riders operate responsibly while safeguarding the lives of their passengers,” Mr. Mubarak explained.
The Offinso North Branch Chairman of NUTOG, Ogye Ahɔhoɔ Nana Boateng, popularly known as Hon. J.K., described the meeting as highly beneficial, noting that members have gained vital knowledge on compliance and passenger safety.
He assured that the Union would work closely with local authorities to ensure strict adherence to regulations and continuous education of riders.
Some riders and tricycle owners who attended the meeting expressed appreciation to the Union and the police for the initiative, describing it as timely and necessary for improving their livelihoods and ensuring safer transport services within the district.
