Seth Terkper gets top economy post at the Presidency
Former Finance Minister Seth Terkper has been appointed Presidential Adviser on the Economy, tasked with providing strategic counsel to President John Dramani Mahama on key economic issues, including fiscal policy, debt management, and economic recovery strategies.
His appointment comes at a critical time as Ghana grapples with economic challenges such as rising inflation, public debt concerns, and currency depreciation.
Terkper’s expertise will be pivotal in navigating these difficulties and driving sustainable growth.
In his new role, he will work closely with Finance Minister-designate Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to implement a range of economic policies under the Mahama-led administration.
Terkper brings extensive experience to the position, having served as Minister of Finance from 2013 to 2017.
During his tenure, he played a key role in implementing fiscal reforms, improving public financial management, and stabilizing the economy.
Notably, he was instrumental in negotiating Ghana’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and introducing the Energy Sector Levy Act (ESLA) to address energy sector debt.
His appointment reflects the government's commitment to leveraging expertise to tackle Ghana’s economic challenges.
With his deep understanding of fiscal policy and economic management, Terkper is expected to help shape policies that foster growth, stabilize the macroeconomic environment, and enhance investor confidence.
