#2024Polls: 6 creatives head into the 9th Parliament
There are six creative arts figures who will be in Ghana’s 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.
Of these, two are women, five are newcomers, and two are independent candidates.
Ghana went to the polls on Saturday, December 7, 2024.
Abla Dzifa Gomashie (National Democratic Congress (NDC))
Actress, producer and writer Abla Dzifa Gomashie did not break a sweat maintaining her place in parliament representing the Ketu South constituency. A former Deputy Minister of Tourism, she will be serving her second term in the seat, and is the only veteran on the list.
Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu (National Democratic Congress (NDC))
Popularly called Baba Sadiq, the serial entertainment entrepreneur resigned from the CEO office of the company he founded, 3Music Network (3Music Awards, 3Music TV) in September 2022, and soon launched his political career. He was declared the Okaikwei Central winner, overcoming the New Patriotic Party (NPP) incumbent Patrick Yaw Boamah.
A-Plus: (Independent)
Kwame Asare Obeng, alias A-Plus, is a rapper, singer, entertainment pundit, activist and building entrepreneur who first became popular for his socio-political commentary utilising music. In his first attempt, he overcame Nana Eyiah Quansah of the NPP for the Gomoa Central seat.
John S. Dumelo (National Democratic Congress (NDC))
For his second attempt, John Setor Dumelo has unseated the NPP’s Lydia Alhassan. The actor, farmer and politician showed public support for the NDC in 2016 during the campaign season. In 2020, he emerged the NDC’s parliamentary candidate. His 2024 victory ends a 24-year reign of the ruling party in the plush constituency.
Ebi Bright: (National Democratic Congress (NDC))
Tema Central’s next Member of Parliament (MP) is an actress-turned-politician called Ebi Bright, who emerged victorious after opposing the NPP’s Charles Forson. 118 votes made the difference for the Ms Bright on her second attempt.
Ohene Kwame Frimpong (Independent)
The entertainment and media entrepreneur Ohene Kwame Frimpong, alias OK Frimpong, will represent the Asante Akyem North constituency in parliament, after overcoming the NPP incumbent Andy Appiah-Kubi and opposition from the NDC’s Kofi Asamoah, upon his debut.
