Amerado: I draw energy from pain | My hairstyle's a symbol of resilience, evolution

Rapper Amerado Burner says his hairstyle was birthed out of a decision to be resilient.

It is also a symbol of how he is actively evolving, he explained.

"I used to leave two bundles of my hair hanging," he pointed to his forehead.

It was to "depict the concept of evolution," he revealed and cited "something called the Mendel and Darwin law."

"I believe you can't always do the same things and expect different results. So the two hair bundles used to represent my daily evolution and [as an ideal] it reflects on my lifestyle, music, the way I talk, the way I carry myself as a brand," he explained.

Currently, the 2022 3Music Awards Rapper of the Year, has shaved the sides of his head and twisted what's left into more than seven balls.

Guesting on the 'Time with the Stars' programme on CTV, 22 November, Amerado was revealing details about why he decided against cutting his hair after suffering a heartbreak.

"I started doing this [hairstyle] 5 years ago, when I had a heartbreak," he said. "I promised myself, I won't cut my hair again. If I was ever going to cut it, it'd be the sides of my head only."

"I told myself I'll make myself proud, out of the heartbreak, I'd also become a person of significance," he pointed to his hair and added: "And that this will always be something that will remind me that I started from a place where I was broken."

Larry Bozzle, host for the programme, queried if the relationship with his girlfriend ended because of his unfaithfulness.

Amerado categorically said: "I did not cheat but it's gone and so I think [that conversation] is irrelevant. We are growing so everything is gone."

He also clarified that his former girlfriend did not influence the hair style, contrary to the impression created. It was birthed out of a personal vow to himself, he stressed.

"It's my decision. She's not the one who influenced me. I told myself that because of what's happened, I'll do this out of it. She did not influence me," the 27-year-old stated.

Derrick Sarfo Kantanka, alias Amerado, also spoke about sticking to rap which he explained is his catharsis and  key to his survival.

Larry had wondered why he did not commit to doing Gospel music, a more popular choice for musicians when they experience low moments, during his heartbreak.

"I've always stuck to being a rapper," Amerado Burner said. "And I feel like this is the only way I could survive. Everyone has their thing and this is mine. I discovered this when I was very young in school."

"I saw the woman leaving me as a stepping stone for me to push harder and then make that person know that I was actually meant for this," he added, perhaps hinting at a reason for the break up.

"I think it's not the best to fall [and lie there] just because you're facing trials," the 'Patience' hitmaker shook his head slightly. "There are people watching and looking up to you, so when you go down, you make sure you rise up and run faster. That's my mindset."

When Larry Bozzle probed further, he said: "I'm a positive guy," and I draw "my energy from pain, so instead of laying back and changing my genre, I told myself that I'll stick to what I am doing [rap music] but then I'll do something symbolic that one day when I look into the mirror, it'll be a factual statement that, 'Ah, I did this because of that and it's manifesting'." He was speaking about the symbolism of keeping his hair predominantly uncut.

In fact, "Break up or no break up, I have to make sure I make it, at the end of the day," he emphasised.

Amerado is out with his debut album titled 'GINA (God Is Never Asleep)'. The project houses 10 songs. 'Grace' featuring Lasmid and 'Nyame Dada (The Ancient God)' featuring Fameye are already hits from the long play (LP).
