Black Sherif’s rise began on whatsApp status, says Kafui Dey
Ghanaian media personality and broadcaster Kafui Dey has disclosed that award-winning musician Black Sherif built the foundation of his successful music career through the consistent use of WhatsApp Status.
Speaking during an interview on Joy Prime TV on June 10, 2026, Kafui Dey recounted a conversation he had with the celebrated artiste regarding the strategy that helped him gain recognition before becoming a household name.
According to Kafui Dey, Black Sherif regularly uploaded his songs to his WhatsApp Status, using the feature as a direct promotional tool to reach friends, contacts, and anyone who viewed his updates. The broadcaster explained that the musician remained consistent with this approach, gradually expanding his audience beyond his immediate network.
He noted that Black Sherif realised his music was beginning to make an impact when people he had never met started recognising his work.
"The moment he knew things were changing was when he walked through Konongo and complete strangers began complimenting his music," Kafui Dey revealed.
Using the artiste's journey as an example, Kafui Dey highlighted the growing influence of social media in the entertainment industry. He stressed that digital platforms now give creatives the opportunity to promote their work independently and connect directly with audiences without depending entirely on traditional media channels.
According to him, social media has become a powerful broadcasting tool that enables artistes to build communities around their talent and grow their brands organically.
Beyond discussing his marketing tactics, Kafui Dey also praised Black Sherif's character and maturity. He described the musician as humble, focused, and exceptionally wise for his age.
"Blacko is a very gentle person, but he is extremely focused. When he speaks, he sounds much older than he is. He sounds like a 40-year-old man, yet he is only in his early twenties," he said.
Black Sherif has since emerged as one of Ghana's most successful music exports, earning international recognition through chart-topping songs, major award wins, and performances on global stages.
