DJ Azonto: I don’t have a manager because of their lust for money, incompetence

DJ Azonto appearing on Class Media Group’s (CMG) CTV, Tuesday, December 6, 2022, has explained why he does not yet have a manager.

In his opinion, artiste managers often are distracted from their main duties by their lust for money.

"You know a Ghanaian manager will demand we charge" for interviews, he said. "They only think about money, money, money."

To him, it is ironic that these managers are only into moneymaking but cannot afford luxury cars.

"I see them in Elantra, Opel [and others]," he wondered. "I don't know what is wrong with them. If they are not ready to work, they should hand over, we [the artistes] will do it all by ourselves."

DJ Azonto was on the ‘Class Showbiz’ programme. Host Sammy Flex queried if he handles all his bookings.

If you “ask me for my WhatsApp number, I’ll write it for you. [I handle] all my finances,” he answered. “It’s not because I am greedy.”

“I have a 12-member team,” he revealed. “So one may ask why I wouldn’t make one a manager? I have bouncers and all that.”

DJ Azonto also disclosed that he may not have a manager but “I have two advisors, who monitor all my interviews and don’t make me sleep – we can be on the phone for three hours.”

Noting that one is called “Ken,” he explained that the advisors point out his mistakes to him and “I pay them at the end of every month.”

The ‘Fa No Fom’ hitmaker cited an instance to highlight his issue with artiste managers.

He recalled a time, “months ago,” when he was billed to perform with another musician "who often trends on social media" at the Odwira Festival. He remembers they were given “GHS30,000, as at that time – it wasn’t small money,” in addition to about five rooms and a convoy but this unnamed musician, “who is my brother – we even chatted today,” said “his accommodation was small and so he wouldn’t sleep there.”

Hesitating to say the said music act's management failed to properly handle the situation, he said, “Maybe I don’t understand them," and reasoned: “Management normally think they’ve spent so much money so when an event organiser decides to give them 5,000 or 10,000, they don’t want to accept it. But I think that every money is money [every money offered should be appreciated].”

The popular disk jockey advised musicians to "understand the game [showbiz]," and be wary of managers who reject money from event organisers simply because they think it is not commensurate with their efforts.

He stressed that even "Nigerian stars come to play free shows in Ghana."

Sammy Flex probed if the artiste he was refering to was Black Sherif. Showing a bit of discomfort, DJ Azonto pleaded: "Oh, if you'd let me, I'd really like to withhold the name."

Bemoaning how a former manager of his failed several times to prompt him about important media interviews requested of him via social media, and was rather "writing to girls," he noted he would only get a manager, "if I find someone competent."
