Diana Hamilton opens up about her Pentecostal roots and musical journey on Accra FM
Gospel powerhouse Diana Antwi Hamilton has shared deep insights into her musical journey, inspiration, and strong Pentecostal foundation, speaking in an interview on Accra 100.5 FM’s Ayekoo Ayekoo hosted by Dr. Kay Nie.
When asked how many songs she has released this year, Diana explained that she believes she has about four projects out, but clarified that “Papabi” is part of “Me Nyankopon” and has not yet been officially released.
She added that her newest single, “Aha Ye” is the latest project she has brought out this year.
She also mentioned working with Pastor Keith Boateng on a praise medley made up of Pentecostal songs.
Dr. Kay Nie asked why Pentecostal songs—which have existed for decades—sound different and carry a unique spiritual atmosphere when Diana performs them. She responded:
“I’m a Pentecostal. If you are a Pentecostal child and you’ve stayed in the church for a long time, worshipping under great personalities, that grace stays with you. That’s why I say I am Pentecostal.”
Diana recalled that her music journey began around 1993, when she was a backing vocalist for Pastor Francis Adjei. She emphasised that singing was never something she pursued with the mindset of becoming famous; it was simply something she loved doing.
Speaking on what kept her going all these years, she said giving up was never an option:
“I just loved what I was doing. I was happy at every stage of my life with what God was doing. I appreciated every opportunity. Back then, I was young; Mama Mary Ghansa and Auntie Tagoe were older, so it wasn’t about wanting to be like them—it was admiration.”
She added that seeing younger singers like Suzy and Mat made the journey feel achievable because they were her age mates.
Diana concluded that her consistency comes from her commitment to ministry:
“We were in the ministry, so anything that came, I saw it as part of the job. I don’t remember ever wanting to give up.”
