MoTCCA reopens Ussher Fort and James Fort to public after safety review
The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts (MoTCCA) has announced the reopening of Ussher Fort and James Fort to tour operators, tourists and the general public.
According to the ministry, the decision follows a temporary closure of the sites and extensive consultations with the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB). These engagements, MoTCCA said, have led to the implementation of adequate safety measures that will allow controlled public access without compromising visitor safety or the integrity of ongoing restoration works.
The ministry clarified that the earlier directive to close the forts was issued purely in the interest of public safety.
“As part of the reopening, the ministry, in collaboration with the GMMB, has put in place strict access guidelines and monitoring mechanisms to ensure that visits do not interfère with the ongoing restoration works. All visitors, tour guides, and operators are required to comply fully with the measures,” the ministry emphasised.
It further cautioned, “Unauthorized access outside approved areas remaın strictly prohibited.”
MoTCCA reiterated its commitment to preserving Ghana’s cultural heritage while ensuring that historic sites remain accessible, safe and educational for all.
