Pete Edochie: Nigerian film legend knocks off death rumor
Pete Edochie Laughs Off Fresh Death Hoax, Says ‘I’m Still Standing’
Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has once again dismissed widespread rumours claiming he is dead, describing the recurring reports as baseless and exhausting.
The celebrated screen icon, known for his commanding roles and deep baritone voice, said this is not the first time false news of his death has circulated. According to him, similar claims have surfaced repeatedly over the years, with fabricated stories alleging he died overseas, in a plane crash, or after a sudden illness.
The latest rumour suggested that the 78-year-old actor had been rushed to hospital and passed away, with claims that his son, Uche Edochie, had confirmed the news on social media. However, the actor has firmly denied the report.
Speaking in a telephone interview on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, Edochie made it clear that he is alive and well. “I am alive. I will leave this world only when my Creator decides it is time,” he said.
Expressing frustration over the repeated false announcements, the respected actor remarked that he has been falsely declared dead several times. “They have killed me about seven times,” he stated, recounting past instances where rumours claimed he died abroad or in a plane crash while travelling from Enugu to Ethiopia.
He also shared a personal experience where his wife received an early morning phone call from someone claiming he had died. In another instance, he said, a rumour from Ghana alleged he had already been buried.
Despite the repeated hoaxes, Edochie remains optimistic and unshaken. He revealed that he draws inspiration from a lesson shared with him by Nigeria’s late statesman, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. According to him, Azikiwe once said that those who wish death upon others often pass away before their targets. Edochie said he has held on to that belief over the years.
The actor, who will celebrate his 79th birthday on March 7, also pointed to the longevity in his family as a source of confidence. He noted that his father lived until the age of 96.
Pete Edochie remains one of Nollywood’s most revered figures, with decades of contribution to the film industry. His accolades include national recognition as a Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) and the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) Industry Merit Award.
