Tension brews over Daddy Lumba’s funeral plans as family accuses Papa Shee of disregarding Asantehene’s guidance
A growing dispute has emerged over the final funeral rites of Ghanaian highlife legend Daddy Lumba, following accusations that gospel musician and evangelist Papa Shee has ignored key guidance from the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
In an interview on Onua TV’s Onua Maakye morning show, Ebenezer Oppong, cousin of the late musician and chairman of the funeral planning committee, expressed deep concern over what he described as Papa Shee’s “deliberate disregard” for the Asantehene’s counsel on the appropriate timing for the funeral.
“This is not just a family issue—it is a cultural and national matter,” Oppong stressed.
“Otumfuo’s advice was clear and intended to ensure peace, order, and respect for our traditions.”
According to him, tensions escalated when Papa Shee pushed for funeral arrangements that allegedly conflicted with the Asantehene’s recommendation to delay the rites.
Otumfuo, as custodian of Asante customs, reportedly advised a postponement to allow for broader consultation, proper coordination, and culturally significant rites befitting the iconic musician.
Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, was one of Ghana’s most celebrated musicians, with a career spanning over four decades.
His passing has triggered widespread grief, with tributes pouring in from fans, industry colleagues, traditional authorities, and government officials.
Papa Shee has yet to publicly respond to the allegations.
Meanwhile, family members and stakeholders are reportedly engaged in discussions to resolve the disagreement and settle on a funeral date that reflects both cultural expectations and the wishes of the late star’s relatives.
