Minister for Food and Agriculture, Mr. Eric Opoku, is leading a high-level delegation on a five-day working visit to Denmark aimed at addressing Ghana’s food production challenges by drawing lessons from the Nordic nation’s agricultural success story.

The mission, focused on the Danish food and agriculture sector, seeks to promote knowledge exchange and identify business opportunities that could enhance Ghana’s agricultural capacity.

In his remarks, Mr. Opoku highlighted the stark contrast between Ghana’s food production struggles and Denmark’s remarkable efficiency.
“With a population of about six million, Denmark produces enough food to feed over 15 million people and still maintains a significant export capacity.

They have transformed their food systems into a global asset,” he said.

The minister also acknowledged Ghana’s persistent shortfalls in food production.
“We have a challenge because we are unable to produce enough local resources to feed our people.

We import to supplement local production,” he admitted.

The five-day programme is designed as both a diplomatic and technical engagement, with emphasis on practical collaboration.

Mr. Opoku described the initiative as “an interactive session where we can share ideas and eventually agree on specific areas of action.”

The visit aligns with the government’s broader agricultural transformation agenda, particularly the Feed Ghana Programme, launched earlier this year under the NDC administration.

The programme seeks to revitalise agriculture, cut down Ghana’s over $2 billion annual food import bill, and reduce reliance on poultry imports, which alone account for about $300 million.

Engagements with Danish agricultural experts and institutions are expected to generate concrete recommendations and partnerships that could significantly improve Ghana’s food production systems and help the country achieve food security.
