Akufo-Addo launches one-to-one tablet project for 1.3m free SHS students

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has unveiled plans to distribute smart tablets to 1.3 million Senior High School (SHS) students nationwide as part of the Ghana Smart Schools Project, launched in Accra on Monday, 25 March 2024.

The initiative aims to equip students under the free SHS policy with essential technological skills, aligning with the government’s commitment to advancing education through technology.

Additionally, President Akufo-Addo announced the construction of approximately 100 smart SHSs across the country within the next two years, with the goal of enhancing the learning environment and educational opportunities for students nationwide.

The tablets, each fitted with digital content to aid research, teaching, and learning, will provide one-to-one access for students under the Ghana Smart Schools Project. 

Moreover, the government plans to offer discounted tablets and laptops to students and lecturers at the tertiary level, facilitating academic activities.

“At the tertiary level, Ghana is pleased to provide at a discounted price tablets and laptops to students and lecturers to facilitate academic[s]", the president said, adding: "The government continues to seek innovative ways to do STEM and the FSHS policy.”

“The next phase of FSHS policy enhancement will be propelled by digitalisation. This will allow a seamless online and offline teaching and learning experience,” he stated.

At the same event, Education Minister Yaw Osei Adutwum affirmed the government's commitment to advancing education despite economic challenges, emphasising the importance of ensuring no child is left behind. 

He underscored the government's dedication to investing in education, noting that visionary leadership prioritizes building a strong educational foundation for future economic resilience.
