Deputy Minister for Education Dr Clement Apaak has called for stronger social protection measures for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), urging reforms to Ghana’s legal framework to better protect their rights and promote inclusion.

Speaking in Parliament to mark National Disability Day, Dr Apaak said the ongoing review of the country’s disability laws presents an opportunity to align them with international standards and strengthen protections for persons living with disabilities.

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, meanwhile, proposed legislation that would require institutions, factories and government agencies to reserve a percentage of jobs for Persons with Disabilities.

He said a mandatory quota system would help address unemployment among persons with disabilities and provide equal opportunities for them to contribute to national development.

Mr Ayariga also called on political parties to adopt quota systems that would enable Persons with Disabilities to contest parliamentary elections and occupy leadership positions.

According to him, greater representation of persons with disabilities in political decision-making would promote inclusiveness and strengthen democratic governance.

The calls were made during parliamentary discussions marking National Disability Day, with lawmakers highlighting the need for practical measures to remove barriers and support the full participation of Persons with Disabilities in national life.
