Big push for nat'l infrastructure: Parliament approves massive road dev't programme with key routes under construction

In a landmark move to accelerate Ghana's infrastructure growth, Parliament today approved the Government's ambitious 'Big Push' Programme, channeling GH₵ 13.8 billion from oil revenues and mineral royalties into a comprehensive road development initiative across the country.

The programme, highlighted during the recent Budget Statement and Economic Policy, aims to boost economic growth and create sustainable jobs through extensive road rehabilitation, upgrading, and construction projects nationwide. This multi-year expenditure commitment is authorized under Section 33 of the Public Financial Management Act, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Key roads captured under the Big Push include:

1. Western and Northern Corridor Roads:

- Rehabilitation of Wa - Han Road (Km 0 - 54)

- Upgrading of Tumu - Hamile Road (Km 40 - 55)

- Upgrading of Tumu - Han - Lawra Road (Km 0 - 10)

- Partial Reconstruction of Navrongo - Tumu Road (27 km)

- Upgrading of Tumu - Sissili - Navrongo Road (Km 0 - 15)

- Upgrading of Tumu - Chuchuliga - Navrongo (Km 15 - 47), including bridges over Kanyibie and Bechelihu rivers

- Partial Reconstruction of Navrongo Chuchuliga - Sandema Road (16 km)

2. Central and Southern Roads:

- Rehabilitation of Wenchi - Sawla Road (multiple sections from Km 0 to 195)

- Reconstruction of Techiman - Nkonsia - Wenchi Road (32.6 km)

- Rehabilitation of Tema - Aflao Road (Km 1 - 18.3)

- Upgrading of Akosombo-Gyakiti-Kudikope Feeder Road

- Rehabilitation of Ho - Kpetoe Road (Km 7.7 - 27.6)

- Rehabilitation of Kpetoe - Aveafiadenyigba Road (Km 27.6 - 62.6)

- Rehabilitation of Penyi - Aflao (Km 85 - 107)

3. Ring Roads and Bypass Projects:

- Construction of Sunyani Outer Ring Road (17 km, Lot 1 & 2)

- Construction of Tamale 3rd Ring Road (11 km, Lot 1, 2 & 3)

- Construction of Kurnasi Outer Ring Road (15 km)

- Construction of Kumasi Outer Ring Road (15 km, Lot 2 & 3)

- Construction of Winneba Roundabout Interchange and dualization projects

- Dualisation of Winneba - Cape Coast Road (54 km)

- Dualisation of Cape Coast - Takoradi Road (164 km total across three lots)

4. Other Notable Projects:

- Construction of Dambai Bridge

- Construction of Enchi - Elubo Road (71.25 km)

- Reconstruction of Dodowa - Afienya - Dawhenya Road (24.8 km)

- Upgrading of Nkwanta - Oti Damanko (up to 62 km)

- Rehabilitation of Hohoe - Jasikan (30 km)

The projects, which span from the northern borders to the southern coast, are set to significantly improve connectivity, facilitate trade, and support Ghana’s economic transformation. The Ministry of Roads and Highways has already commenced feasibility studies and engineering interventions, with the issuance of construction authorizations underway.

This comprehensive road development initiative underscores the government’s commitment to transforming Ghana into a modern, well-connected nation through the Big Push Programme. Parliament’s approval marks a critical milestone in realizing this vision.
