Birim North DCE reaffirms commitment to reducing teenage pregnancy through sanitary pad distribution
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Birim North District Assembly in the Eastern Region, Mr Hakeem Antwi Abdul, has reaffirmed his commitment to reducing teenage pregnancy and promoting girl-child education following the distribution of sanitary pads to female students across the district.
The initiative, undertaken by the Birim North District Assembly, forms part of a broader strategy to improve menstrual hygiene management in schools and to ensure that girls remain in school and complete their education.
The exercise covered several basic and Senior High Schools within the district.
Speaking during the distribution, Mr. Antwi Abdul noted that inadequate access to sanitary products continues to pose serious challenges for many schoolgirls, often affecting their health, dignity and regular school attendance.
He explained that prolonged absenteeism linked to menstrual challenges can expose girls to vulnerabilities, including teenage pregnancy.
According to the DCE, the provision of sanitary pads is both a welfare and educational intervention, describing it as a strategic investment in the future of the girl-child.
He emphasised that keeping girls in school and supporting their well-being is central to the district’s efforts to reduce teenage pregnancy and improve academic outcomes.
The District Education Director, Solomon Azulugu, commended the District Assembly for the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful.
He said the support would boost the confidence of female students during their menstrual periods and contribute to improved attendance and academic performance.
The Birim North District Assembly has pledged to continue rolling out similar interventions aimed at enhancing girl-child education and addressing social challenges affecting young girls in the district.
