C40 endorses AMA's energy efficiency campaign as model for Global Climate Action

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) Energy Efficiency Campaign, launched this week, has received strong endorsement from C40 Cities, a global network of mayors committed to tackling the climate crisis.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Evans Asamoah, Accra’s C40 Focal Person, described the initiative as a milestone with both local and global significance.
“This launch marks a major milestone not just for Accra but for our entire C40 network.
Accra’s Climate Action Plan aligns with the goals of the Paris Agreement, and this campaign is a clear example of turning that plan into tangible action,” Asamoah said.
“By focusing on municipal buildings, Accra demonstrates its commitment to climate leadership and sets an inspiring example for other cities, especially those in the Global South.”
The AMA campaign, which begins with City Hall, is designed as a pilot project to be scaled up across public institutions, including schools and hospitals.
C40 highlighted the campaign’s potential as a model for other cities worldwide.
“The lessons, data, and best practices from this pilot will be shared across our global network of cities,” Asamoah explained.
“Innovative elements like virtual training and the ‘Energy Champion’ model can be adopted by cities from Lagos to Jakarta to Mexico City.
Peer-to-peer exchange is at the heart of C40’s mission—we accelerate global climate action by helping cities learn from each other’s successes.”
Mr Asamoah added that a measurable reduction in emissions and energy use at City Hall would significantly boost Accra’s credibility in climate action circles.
“A successful outcome will enhance the city’s standing, open doors to international partnerships and green finance, and position Accra as a leading city for smart, scalable, and equitable climate solutions,” he said.
“This reinforces our belief that city-led climate action is essential to building a healthier, more resilient future for everyone.”
