Chief in Ashanti Region shot dead in suspected targeted attack

The Kusasi Chief of the Ashanti Region and Kaadi Divisional Area Chief in the Bawku area of the Upper East Region, Naba Abdul-Malik Azenbe, was gunned down in a brazen attack in front of his residence at Asawase F-line, near the community centre, on the evening of Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
According to eyewitness accounts, the 58-year-old chief was ambushed at approximately 8:40 PM by two unidentified men riding a motorbike.
One of the assailants, reportedly armed with an AK-47 rifle, fired multiple shots at the traditional leader before fleeing the scene.
Naba Azenbe was initially rushed to the Manhyia District Hospital, but due to the severity of his injuries, he was referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through both the Kusasi and Asawase communities, with many residents expressing fear and outrage over the apparent assassination.
In the wake of the killing, Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, led a delegation to visit the bereaved family.
He assured them that the police had launched a full-scale investigation and vowed that every effort would be made to track down and arrest those behind the attack.
“We understand the pain this loss has caused the family and the community.
We are committed to ensuring that justice is served,” DCOP Teye-Cudjoe said during the visit.
The motive for the killing remains unclear, but police sources say no leads are being ruled out at this stage of the investigation.
The public has been urged to provide any information that could assist in apprehending the culprits.
