At least 16 people are feared dead following a devastating road traffic accident near Nsawam on the Accra–Kumasi Highway, after a VIP passenger bus collided with a fuel tanker and two private vehicles, triggering a massive fire.

Preliminary and unconfirmed reports indicate that several victims were burned beyond recognition when the vehicles were engulfed in flames shortly after the collision.

The intense blaze reportedly spread rapidly, making rescue efforts extremely difficult.

Eyewitnesses say the crash caused panic among motorists and nearby residents, with thick plumes of smoke billowing into the sky as emergency responders rushed to the scene.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, the Police Service, and the National Ambulance Service are currently leading rescue and recovery operations.

Bystanders are also assisting in efforts to clear the wreckage and help survivors, while authorities work to ascertain the exact cause of the accident and confirm the number of casualties.

The tragic incident has paralysed traffic along the busy highway, resulting in a long vehicular gridlock and severely disrupting movement between Accra and Kumasi.

Motorists have been advised to exercise caution and use alternative routes where possible.

Further details are expected as investigations continue and officials provide updates on the situation.
