The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has announced that the government has commenced a nationwide distribution of fertiliser to support smallholder farmers, with every agricultural constituency in the country allocated 1,500 bags.

The minister disclosed the development while presenting an update on national agricultural productivity measures before Parliament’s Committee on Assurances.

Timely Input Distribution

Mr Opoku explained that the distribution is designed to ensure that smallholder farmers — who make up the vast majority of Ghana's farming population — have timely access to essential farming inputs to secure national food security and boost overall crop yields during the current planting season.

The minister emphasised that the distribution model bypasses broader district boundaries to ensure that resources are split directly into distinct constituencies.

“We have recently distributed fertilisers to all the agricultural constituencies in this country. Every constituency has been given 1,500 bags. It is not even district, it is every constituency,” Mr Opoku stated.

Delivery Deadlines

Addressing potential gaps in the initial supply chain, the minister noted that while some areas are still awaiting their physical stock due to transport timelines, logistics teams are working to finish deliveries quickly.

“Those who have not received, maybe the contractors are still supplying, so they will receive theirs," the minister added. "But it is believed that by the close of next week, every district will have received the quantities we have assigned to them.”

The fertiliser drive is part of the ministry's broader input distribution strategy, which runs alongside the Feed Ghana Programme aimed at modernising agricultural practices and lowering the country's reliance on food imports.
