Foreign Affairs Minister represents Ghana at Cabo Verde’s 50th independence anniversary

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa, has described it as a profound honour to represent President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana at the 50th independence anniversary celebration of the Republic of Cabo Verde.
Speaking after the ceremony held yesterday in the island nation, the Minister highlighted the deep historical ties between Ghana and Cabo Verde, underscoring Ghana’s pivotal role in the broader African liberation struggle.
She reflected on the moving tribute paid to Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, whose vision and support were instrumental to the continent’s fight for freedom.
Particular mention was made of Nkrumah’s influence on Amílcar Lopes Cabral, the revered Cabo Verdean and Bissau-Guinean revolutionary leader.
“The eloquent reminder of Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah’s inspiration and his direct support for the legendary freedom fighter, Amílcar Cabral, was both a moving and proud experience,” he noted.
Quoting Nkrumah’s famous declaration—“We prefer self-government with danger to servitude in tranquillity”—the Minister reaffirmed Ghana’s enduring commitment to African solidarity, independence, and unity.
Cabo Verde gained independence from Portuguese colonial rule on July 5, 1975.
This year’s golden jubilee celebration brought together dignitaries from across the continent to mark the milestone and reflect on the journey of progress and self-determination
