GIS Governing Council visits KIA, pledges stronger border protection
The Chairman of the Governing Council of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Rev. Stephen Wengam, has reaffirmed the Service’s unwavering commitment to protecting Ghana’s borders, assuring the public of enhanced security at all entry points.
He gave the assurance when the Council paid a working visit to the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra, where they interacted with officers and inspected facilities.
Rev. Wengam disclosed that the Council is set to introduce a new initiative aimed at boosting logistical and operational support for the Service.
The initiative will seek contributions from both public and private stakeholders to bridge existing funding gaps.
According to him, relying solely on government subvention is no longer adequate to meet the Service’s increasing logistical and infrastructure demands.
Welcoming the team, the Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Immigration (Dr.) Noah Ahomka Yeboah, underscored GIS’s contribution to national revenue generation.
However, he detailed several operational challenges, including inadequate office space, insufficient residential facilities for staff, and a shortfall of vehicles and essential border management equipment.
As part of the visit, a staff durbar was held to provide officers the opportunity to air their views and engage directly with the Governing Council.
Addressing the staff, the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Mr. Samuel Basentale Amadu, strongly condemned recent attacks and killings of immigration officers in parts of the country.
He urged calm and appealed to residents in conflict-prone areas to support security personnel in maintaining peace and order.
