The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has officially released the list of qualified candidates for its upcoming national and regional executive elections scheduled for June 30, 2025.

The list, published by the GJA Elections Committee, featured a total of 62 vetted and approved aspirants; 13 at the national level, and 49 at the regional level, vying for leadership roles across the association.

In the Volta Region, GJA Administrator Lambert Kofi Atsivor, a well-known broadcast journalist and former regional correspondent for several media outlets, has been cleared to contest the position of Regional Secretary. His bid, part of a broader contest in the region, has drawn interest from media professionals and observers alike, who see the Volta contest as one of the most vibrant races in this year’s regional elections.

Joining Lambert Atsivor in the Volta Regional race are other contenders aiming for key executive roles.

Agbaxode Emmanuel, Chief Reporter with the Ghana News Agency and the incumbent Chairman; and Harrison Kofi Belley, a lecturer at the Evangelical Presbyterian2025 University College. Both men are contesting the Chairperson position.

Setordjie Ivy is running unopposed for Vice Chairperson.

The Treasurer position sees a contest between Nutsukpoe King Freeman with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) and Kpodo Ewoenam from the Ghana News Agency (GNA).

In the Oti Region, Ntow Kwabena is seeking to lead the regional branch as Chairperson, further strengthening the narrative that these two neighboring regions will be pivotal in shaping the future of the association’s regional administration.

The GJA Elections Committee emphasised the publication of the candidates list marked a critical step toward fostering democratic governance within the association.

In line with the GJA's commitment to fairness, transparency, and due process, the Vetting Committee duly reviewed and investigated petitions that it received against some candidates

The committee also commended members who filed petitions for showing vigilance and helping to uphold internal democratic processes, ensuring that the GJA's Constitution and precedent rulings were respected during vetting.

Across the country, journalists are preparing to choose their leaders at both the national and regional levels. Some of the prominent national candidates include: Albert Kwabena Dwumfour and Mawusi Yao Charles, contesting for President; Rebecca Ekpe and Mary Tawiah Mensah for Vice President; and Dominic Hlordzi and Agyeman Akwasi for General Secretary.

With stakes high and competition intense, especially in regions like Volta and Oti, the upcoming elections are expected to not only determine leadership but also set the tone for the future of journalism practice and advocacy in Ghana.
