GNFS denies assault allegations involving Class Media Group journalist
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has denied allegations that its personnel assaulted a journalist with Class Media Group during an incident at the Kasoa New Market.
Speaking in an interview, the National Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, DO II Desmond Ackah, refuted claims that officers attacked Class FM reporter, Samuel Addo, while he was covering a confrontation between firefighters and traders at the market.
According to Mr. Ackah, personnel of the Service were at the market to undertake an official operation when misunderstandings arose, resulting in heightened tensions at the scene. He stressed that the actions of the officers were not intended to harm the journalist and were carried out within their mandate to manage the situation.
He maintained that the Ghana National Fire Service respects the role of the media and would not deliberately obstruct journalists in the lawful discharge of their duties.
Mr. Ackah further disclosed that management of the Service is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident and remains open to engaging all relevant stakeholders to establish the facts.
The GNFS denial follows reports by Class Media Group that its journalist was assaulted while filming the altercation, an incident that has drawn concern from media practitioners and press freedom advocates.
As investigations continue, the Service has called for calm and assured the public of its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and cooperation with the media.
