GRDA distances itself from GRCL industrial action

The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has clarified that it is not involved in the industrial action announced by the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL), set to take place on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
In a statement signed by its Acting Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Frederick Appoh, the GRDA emphasised that the two institutions are entirely separate entities with distinct legal mandates and operational responsibilities.
“The GRDA and the GRCL are separate entities.
While the GRDA is responsible for owning, developing, maintaining, and regulating railway infrastructure, the GRCL is focused on operating railway services, including both passenger and freight transport,” the statement explained.
The GRDA, established under the Railways Act, 2008 (Act 779), reassured the public that it remains fully operational and unaffected by the GRCL’s planned demonstration.
The Authority further emphasised that it has not initiated or endorsed any form of public protest.
“We are currently focused on final preparations for the operationalisation of the newly constructed 97-kilometre Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line, which will soon be supported by two new trains procured by the government,” Dr. Appoh noted.
Describing the Tema-Mpakadan project as a major milestone, the GRDA highlighted its continued commitment to implementing Ghana’s Railway Master Plan and developing efficient standard-gauge railway infrastructure across the country.
The Authority called on the public to clearly distinguish between its mandate and that of the GRCL, reiterating that the planned strike by the GRCL has no bearing on GRDA operations.
“Our staff remain dedicated to advancing key national infrastructure projects, and we thank the public for its continued support and understanding,” the statement concluded
