Ghana Railway Authority takes delivery of 2 locomotives and 20 freight wagons
The Ghana Railway Authority (GRA) has officially received two new locomotives and a fleet of 20 freight wagons at the Port of Tema, marking a significant step forward in the modernisation of the country’s rail infrastructure.
The newly arrived rolling stock represents the first batch of equipment delivered under a comprehensive procurement contract established between the government of Ghana and Afcons Infrastructure Limited.
The agreement is designed to substantially boost the operational capacity and hauling efficiency of the national rail network.
Testing and Integration Phase Begins
Following the successful offloading of the heavy machinery at the port, the Ghana Railway Authority has initiated a structured technical assessment program.
According to transport officials, the locomotives and freight wagons will undergo immediate, rigorous testing and commissioning procedures.
These mandatory trials are required to verify tracking compliance, brake systems, and overall mechanical readiness before the fleet is formally integrated into active commercial operations.
Strategic Infrastructure Backing
The arrival of the rolling stock aligns directly with the Ministry of Railway Development’s broader master plan to revitalize the country’s industrial transport lines.
The procurement is expected to enhance freight logistics, particularly for heavy commodities like bauxite and manganese, by easing pressure on national highways, lowering bulk transit costs, and speeding up supply chain connectivity between key mining hubs and maritime shipping terminals.
