Ghana's lithium deal under fire: PAG demands fairer terms
The Progressive Alliance of Ghana (PAG) has slammed the proposed lithium deal between the government and Barari DV Ghana Limited, calling it "unjust and unfair" to the Ghanaian people.
The deal, which gives the government a 13% free-carried interest in the project, has been criticized by PAG for perpetuating the country's history of exploitation by foreign companies.
"PAG believes that Ghanaians must become the true owners of the riches and wealth from our minerals under the ground," said Dr. John Kpikpi, Presidential Aspirant for PAG.
The alliance is demanding a significant revision of the deal, calling for Ghana to have at least 85% ownership of the lithium project, with Barari DV Ghana Limited holding 15%.
"We are tired of this constant over-exploitation of our resources by foreigners with the collusion of all our successive governments," Dr Kpikpi said.
PAG also emphasized the need for Ghana to develop its own expertise in lithium mining and processing, rather than relying on foreign companies.
The group is urging the government to take the deal off the table and renegotiate a more equitable agreement that benefits the Ghanaian people.
Key Demands:
- Ghana to have at least 85% ownership of the lithium project
- Barari DV Ghana Limited to hold 15%
- Development of Ghanaian expertise in lithium mining and processing
- Stop exporting raw ore and focus on value addition
