Gov’t to terminate and re-award Pwalugu dam contract – Agric Minister

The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has announced that the government has directed the Attorney-General to begin processes to terminate the existing Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam contract and re-award it for construction.
He explained that the decision is part of efforts to provide a permanent solution to the annual flooding caused by the spillage of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso, which continues to devastate communities in Ghana’s Upper East and North East Regions.
For years, the spillage has destroyed farmlands, homes, and livestock, threatening livelihoods and food production.
Mr. Opoku emphasised that the government, under President John Mahama’s leadership, is committed to completing the Pwalugu Dam as a long-term measure to protect farmers and strengthen food security.
“What we are doing is that we have asked the AG to initiate the processes for the termination of the contract, re-award the contract, and the president is committed to ensuring that the Pwalugu dam is constructed,” the Minister told journalists in Accra on Friday, August 29.
He added that once completed, the dam will mitigate the effects of the Bagre spillage on local communities.
In the meantime, residents are being educated on how to manage the impact of the floods as preparations are made for the project’s execution.
