Government to destroy seized weapons on July 9 after gun amnesty ends
The Ministry of the Interior has announced plans to publicly destroy all weapons surrendered or seized under the country's gun amnesty programme on July 9.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak disclosed this during an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, stating that the ministry would provide further details on the next phase of firearms regulation during a press briefing.
“This morning I'll be addressing the press about this gun amnesty which has ended. Because we are going to destroy all the seized weapons on the 9th of July,” he said.
The announcement comes as the government moves to strengthen oversight of firearms ownership following the nationwide suspension of all active gun licences.
According to the minister, concerns over the misuse of legally registered firearms, including a recent incident linked to the Kristo Asafo Mission, informed the decision to tighten regulations.
Mr Mubarak said the revised licensing regime will introduce stricter requirements for firearm applicants, including mandatory mental health assessments, drug tests and shooting range training.
The gun amnesty programme allowed individuals to voluntarily surrender illegal firearms without facing prosecution and formed part of efforts to reduce the circulation of unregistered weapons.
The ministry is expected to outline further details of the weapon destruction exercise and the new licensing framework at its upcoming media briefing.
