The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that 12 people have died following Monday's devastating floods in parts of the Greater Accra Region, while close to 500 others have been rescued from affected communities.

Speaking to Class News on Tuesday, June 30, GNFS Public Relations Officer Alex King Nartey said firefighters and other emergency responders have been engaged in continuous rescue operations since the heavy rains triggered widespread flooding across the capital.

According to him, rescue teams evacuated nearly 500 people between Sunday and Monday from flood-hit areas across Accra.

He said about 105 people were rescued from Tse Addo, while another 300 were evacuated from the Odawna enclave. Additional rescue operations were carried out in Dome, Kwabenya, Adenta, Anyaa and Ablekuma, where several residents were trapped by rising floodwaters.

Mr. Nartey confirmed that 12 deaths have so far been recorded but cautioned that the figure could increase as search and recovery efforts continue.

He said the confirmed fatalities include a mother and her child at Alogboshie, one person at Achimota, two at Alajo, four at Odawna and two at Tema Newtown.

The Fire Service spokesperson explained that the current casualty figures have been verified through the GNFS and partner emergency agencies, stressing that authorities are working to confirm additional reports before releasing any updated death toll.

He added that while a few victims sustained minor injuries during the flooding, none were life-threatening, and those affected have since been treated and discharged.

Search and rescue operations remain underway, with emergency teams still looking for at least one elderly person reported missing at Tema Newtown.

The latest update comes as emergency agencies continue to assess the full impact of one of the worst flooding incidents to hit the Greater Accra Region in recent years.
