'How can Ofori-Atta advise Akufo-Addo on the same economy he destroyed?' – Pianim wonders

Economist Kwame Pianim

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is "the person who led us into the financial and economic crisis that we are in," Economist Kwame Pianim has said, wondering how the same person, appointed as the Senior Presidential Adviser and Special Envoy for International Trade, would advise the president on the same economy he destroyed.

"We haven’t been here before", Mr Pianim complained, noting: "There has never been a time when Ghana has not been able to pay its bills, and we are not going to start paying them until 2025".

"This is the same guy who gets us kicked out of the Eurobond market. How can he be an envoy?” Mr Pianim asked.

In his view, President Akufo-Addo "knows that the international community is not that gullible, so, you don’t send him [Ofori-Atta] there".

"We don’t have an economy now, so, what is he going to advise on?” Mr Pianim asked in a recent Joy News interview.

The president removed his cousin from office as finance minister in his ministerial reshuffle a few weeks ago.

Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, a former deputy to Mr Ofori-Atta now replaces his former boss.
