The Prime Minister of Jamaica, Dr. the Most Honourable Andrew Michael Holness, has received a high-level Ghanaian delegation in Kingston, expressing profound gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana for their support following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Holness commended Ghana for its timely assistance and solidarity, describing the gesture as one Jamaica would never forget.

He noted that Ghana’s intervention during the difficult period reflected genuine friendship and shared historical bonds between the two countries.

Discussions between the two sides covered a range of strategic areas aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.

Among the key outcomes was an agreement to deploy Ghanaian teachers and nurses to Jamaica later this year under a special labour exchange arrangement designed to address critical workforce needs in Jamaica’s education and health sectors.

The two countries also agreed to begin processes toward the establishment of a Ghana–Jamaica Defence Cooperation Agreement, marking a significant step in deepening security and military collaboration.

Economic cooperation featured prominently in the talks, with discussions on business and investment opportunities for Ghanaian companies.

This comes as Jamaica prepares to undertake a major infrastructural revamp under Prime Minister Holness’ vision to “build back better” following the hurricane.

On the international front, Prime Minister Holness pledged Jamaica’s full support for President Mahama’s proposed United Nations resolution seeking to declare the transatlantic slave trade the greatest crime against humanity and to advance calls for reparations.

The Ghanaian delegation expressed appreciation for the warm reception and exceptional hospitality extended by the Jamaican Prime Minister, noting that Ghana looks forward to hosting Dr. Holness in the near future, following his expressed desire to visit the African continent and reconnect with the motherland.
