Ken Ofori -Atta appears in US court today
Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is scheduled to appear before a U.S. court today, January 20, 2026, in relation to his immigration status in the United States.
The hearing is part of proceedings initiated by U.S. immigration authorities concerning his legal status in the country.
The case comes amid Ghana’s continued push for his extradition to face charges at home.
Ofori-Atta has been in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and detained at a facility in Virginia.
The hearing is expected to focus on his status and whether he can remain in the U.S. temporarily or face removal proceedings.
Ghana has formally requested his extradition over 78 corruption-related counts, and the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General, Dr Dominic Ayine, has indicated the U.S. will not interfere with that process — though the outcome depends on U.S. judicial and immigration rulings.
Ghana’s Ambassador to the U.S., Victor Smith, has reported that Ofori-Atta is concerned about how he would be treated if returned to Ghana, adding another human dimension to the complex legal and diplomatic situation.
