Mind your words on Bawku — Otumfuo advises Cletus Avoka
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has cautioned former Member of Parliament for Zebilla, Cletus Avoka, to moderate his public commentary on the Bawku situation, warning that unguarded statements could undermine the ongoing peace efforts.
Speaking on Tuesday, December 16, during the presentation of the Bawku Mediation Committee’s report to President John Dramani Mahama, the Asantehene underscored the need for careful and responsible communication as reconciliation progresses. He noted that the current environment demands sensitivity, adding that remarks capable of stirring emotions or deepening divisions do little to support the fragile process aimed at uniting the people.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II observed that although the legal framework clearly recognizes the authority of the Bawku Naba, the moment calls for restraint rather than rhetoric that could provoke renewed tensions. He explained that the focus has shifted beyond disputes to healing, mutual respect, and rebuilding trust among the affected communities.
The Asantehene urged all individuals involved in the matter to embrace dialogue, cooperation, and national unity, emphasizing that sustainable peace can only be achieved through patience and respect for the mediation structure.
Following the submission of the report to the President, Otumfuo expressed confidence that strict adherence to the committee’s recommendations would help secure lasting calm and stability in Bawku and its surrounding areas.
