V/R: Road infrastructure boosted under government 'Big Push' initiative as accident concerns mount
The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has disclosed significant progress in road infrastructure development across the region under government’s “Big Push” programme, while also raising alarm over increasing road accidents, particularly along the Eastern Corridor Road.
Addressing the Volta Regional House of Chiefs in Ho, Mr Gunu said ongoing road works form part of broader efforts to improve connectivity, trade and mobility across the region. He noted that further inspections are expected in July to assess the pace and quality of construction works.
He stated that the road projects are central to government’s development agenda for the Volta Region, adding that improved road networks would support agriculture, commerce and tourism.
According to him, several road contracts have already been awarded, with contractors mobilised to various sites. He said implementation is ongoing under the “Big Push” infrastructure initiative, which prioritises key transport corridors.
However, the minister expressed concern about rising road accidents in the region, especially along the Eastern Corridor Road, which has recorded multiple fatalities in recent months.
He cited a recent fatal crash that claimed about 15 lives and revealed that seven deaths were recorded along the same corridor in May alone, describing the situation as deeply worrying.
Mr Gunu commended the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, for consistently advocating improved road safety along the corridor. He said government has engaged relevant agencies to introduce measures aimed at reducing accidents.
He further disclosed plans to strengthen emergency response systems at the Ho Teaching Hospital, including support for a dedicated trauma and emergency centre through partnerships with philanthropic organisations, as part of efforts to improve road accident response capacity.
