VIP Coach not the architect of emergency incident on Accra–Kumasi Highway
A VIP Jeoun Scania Marcopolo coach with registration number AC 1401-20 was involved in an emergency situation on the Accra–Kumasi Highway in the early hours of Saturday, February 14, 2026.
The bus, carrying 34 passengers and a three-member crew including the driver, departed Accra’s main terminal at 04:03 GMT en route to Kumasi.
The incident occurred near Okanta, Nsawam in the Eastern Region.
According to preliminary accounts, the coach pulled into the inner lane behind three vehicles — a Toyota Hiace, a Toyota Hilux pick-up, and a Toyota Voxy — while three other vehicles occupied the outer right lane.
A fuel tanker with a reportedly disabled tailboard was stationary in the area and was said to be leaking petroleum onto the road surface.
The situation became complicated when the vehicles ahead of the coach began moving forward while the tanker remained partly positioned in the outer lane.
The driver of the coach reportedly attempted to reverse in order to manoeuvre out of the potentially hazardous situation.
Details surrounding the full sequence of events are still emerging, and authorities are expected to provide further clarification on the incident.
There have been no immediate reports of casualties.
