WHO Regional director for Africa to visit Ghana for high-level health engagements
The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Dr Mohammed Janabi, will undertake an official visit to Ghana from 26 to 27 January 2026 for a series of high-level engagements aimed at advancing Ghana’s health sector priorities and strengthening Africa’s health sovereignty agenda.
During the visit, Dr Janabi will hold a high-level meeting with President John Dramani Mahama to discuss the ongoing Accra Reset Agenda and WHO’s technical support to Ghana’s flagship health initiatives, including the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares) and the Free Primary Health Care Initiative. He will also engage the Minister of Health and the Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority, focusing on health financing, universal health coverage, and sustainable health system reforms.
The visit builds on high-level engagements in August 2025, when Dr Janabi was in Ghana for the Africa Health Sovereignty Summit.
Following the summit, President Mahama launched the Accra Reset Initiative at the 80th United Nations General Assembly, positioning health as a gateway and proof point for broader systemic transformation across Africa. The initiative promotes national ownership of health priorities while encouraging multilateral and bilateral partners to align their support with country-defined needs.
Dr Janabi’s January 2026 visit aims to align WHO’s technical cooperation with Ghana’s national health priorities, reaffirm WHO’s support for the Accra Reset Initiative, and explore opportunities for regional collaboration on health sovereignty, innovative financing, and health system transformation. The visit underscores WHO’s strategic leadership role in Africa and its continued partnership with Ghana to advance equitable, resilient, and sustainable health systems.
