WN/R: Police post set on fire after fatal shooting in Sayerano
A police post at Asempaneye Forest near Sefwi Sayerano in the Juaboso District of the Western North Region has been set on fire by unidentified persons following the fatal police shooting that left two people dead on Tuesday, July 7.
No injuries were reported in the attack, but the incident has increased security concerns in the area.
The attack comes after a confrontation between residents of Sayerano and a police patrol team.
According to the Western North Regional Police Command, preliminary investigations show that three people sustained gunshot wounds during the incident, with two later dying. Three others who were injured are receiving treatment at the Asafo Roman Catholic Hospital.
The Ghana Police Service has interdicted all eight officers involved in the operation, while the Inspector-General of Police has directed the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Police said the confrontation occurred during an operation to arrest a suspected drug peddler.
However, eyewitnesses claimed some residents tried to stop the arrest, leading to a clash between the police and members of the community.
A resident, Okyeame Kwaku Ortiz, told Adom News that officers opened fire during the confrontation after meeting resistance. He alleged that two people died at the scene, while two others suffered gunshot wounds and fractures.
He also claimed another resident was initially reported missing after the incident, raising fears that the person may also have been shot.
Mr Ortiz called for a thorough investigation into the incident and urged the authorities to ensure justice for the victims.
