A/R: Taxi thief busted
The Suntreso District Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old man for his involvement in carjacking within Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital.
The police say eight taxi cabs have been retrieved after his arrest.
The suspect, Alex Owusu, was arrested by the command with the assistance of the Kasoa police on Tuesday, 11 August 2020.
Preliminary investigations, the police say, suggest that the suspect usually hires the services of unsuspecting taxi drivers from the neighbouring towns, especially Obuasi, Nkawkaw and their environs under the pretext of coming to buy excavator parts from the Suame Magazine enclave and sometimes to visit his mother.
"On arrival in Kumasi, the suspect convinces the drivers to park the cars at a washing bay and persuade them to leave the cars under the care of the bay attendant and accompany him to Suame Magazine to buy the supposed excavator parts," the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Godwin Ahianyo, told the media.
The suspect, he said, takes leave of the victims and tells them that he is going to withdraw money from the bank only to return to the washing bay and take the ignition key and drive the car away.
Such cases, he said, have come to the attention of the police and with the assistance of the Kasoa Police Command, arrested the suspect.
Through investigations, he said, the suspect has led the police to retrieve eight of such cars but the number plates have been changed by the suspect.
The taxi cars include Toyota Corolla, Hyundai among others.
ASP Ahianyo appealed to the victims of such thefts to report to the Suntreso District Police Command or any police station to which they reported such cases so that the investigators can liaise with them.
He also advised commercial drivers, especially taxi drivers, to be mindful of juicy fares to prevent falling prey to such incident.
