GA/R: Police arrest key suspect in fatal Gbawe shooting that killed queen-mother
The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a prime suspect in connection with a deadly shooting incident that led to the death of a queen-mother in Gbawe, a suburb of Accra.
Addressing the media at a press briefing, the Public Relations Officer of the Command, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, confirmed that the incident occurred on June 19, 2025, during a naming ceremony held at Gbawe Zero.
According to Superintendent Obeng, the suspect—Gilbert Awuni, also known by his alias "Starboy"—was apprehended at his hideout in Asokore Mampong, a suburb of the Ashanti Region.
His arrest follows days of intelligence-led investigations by the police.
She disclosed that the shooting occurred during a naming ceremony organized by one Ibrahim Nii Ayi Quarshi Solomon, which was attended by traditional leaders and Asafo groups.
Around 7 p.m., as the event was still ongoing, several individuals reportedly began firing locally manufactured firearms indiscriminately, causing panic and chaos.
Tragically, one of the bullets struck and killed the queen-mother, Perl Naa Dodua Bortey-Kaa, while another attendee sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Superintendent Obeng used the opportunity to issue a strong warning to the public, cautioning against the illegal possession and discharge of firearms.
“The possession and use of firearms without lawful authority is a criminal offence.
The police will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute anyone found culpable,” she stressed.
The suspect is currently in police custody and is assisting with further investigations.
Police say efforts are ongoing to apprehend additional suspects connected to the incident.
The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure peace and justice, particularly in events involving large gatherings.
