Lawyer Martin Kpebu says Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly called 'Wontumi', should be considered for an early release from prison to allow him to return to society and prepare for retirement.

In an exclusive interview with Classfmonline.com, Mr Kpebu said that while he supports Chairman Wontumi serving a prison term over his illegal mining conviction, he believes keeping him behind bars for the full 20 years would be excessive.

"He should serve for five to seven years," he said, adding that anything beyond that period "would be too much".

The lawyer said his position rests on the principle that imprisonment should focus on reforming offenders and preparing them to make positive contributions to society.

"He should come back when he will be useful to society and younger people can learn from him," Mr Kpebu stated.

He added that an early return would also give the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman the chance to plan for his later years.

"I am hoping that he will be out soon enough to get ready to retire at 60," he said.

Mr Kpebu emphasised that his focus as a lawyer is on human rights and on ensuring that punishment leads to rehabilitation.
