MELPWU seeks Justice for Lab. scientist assaulted and detained by military during Hwidiem operations
A shocking incident unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at Hwidiem in the Ahafo Region, where a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Mr. Isaac Sakyi, working at St. Elizabeth Catholic Hospital, was reportedly assaulted and detained by personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces during a military operation.
According to a memorandum released by the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers' Union (MELPWU), Mr. Sakyi was on legitimate night duty before the incident occurred.
The assault and detention have sparked widespread concern among MELPWU members and other health professionals in the region.
The union, led by General Secretary Dr. Cephas Kofi Akortor, has swiftly taken steps to engage with the Police, Hospital Management, and other relevant authorities to ascertain the facts of the matter and ensure the safety and justice of their member, Mr. Sakyi.
In the memo dated November 12, 2025, MELPWU urged all members to remain calm and measured as leadership works with authorities to address the situation.
The union warned that it will communicate the next line of action, including the potential withdrawal of services to seek justice for Mr. Sakyi, as soon as verified information becomes available.
MELPWU expressed appreciation for the cooperation, patience, and solidarity of its members during this time.
